On September 10, 2017 Hurricane Irma directly hit the Fort Myers, Florida community including Crown of Life Christian Academy and Lutheran Church. For days, we watched as this monster of a storm slowly moved toward us, reaching record-breaking, sustained Category 5 strength. As we prepared, we didn’t know what the outcome would be for our school, our church, our families, our staff, and our community. Staff scattered as some evacuated to be with family, others drove long distances to stay with friends, while still some hunkered down to ride out the storm. All the while, each one of us knew that God’s promises would continue to hold true as He states to His people in Isaiah 41:10, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
8 days after the storm, the power came back on at the school and church. Only minor damage resulted from the much anticipated, major storm! God is so good! Our staff reunited with rejoicing to be together once again and to work side-by-side to get the buildings and grounds ready for our students to join us. We have heard from many of our school families. All are safe but there are some who are experiencing major flooding to their homes, ruining a fair amount of their personal items. Other families are repairing minor damages to their homes and yards. And still others are blessed with unscathed property from the storm, but they continue to go without power in the midst of Florida’s heat.
We would like to invite you to come along side us in supporting our families in need. Gift cards would be the easiest way for us to encourage, love on, and help these families rebuild their homes, fill their pantries, and provide for their children’s needs. Recommended cards would be to Publix, Wal-Mart, Target, and Visa gift cards and can be delivered to the Crown of Life office at 5820 Daniels Parkway, Fort Myers, FL 33912. Our director, Miss Rixe has been communicating with many of our families, reaching out to know how each one is faring, and will disperse the gift cards based on needs. Please, prayerfully consider donating to our Crown of Life families.
To those in our school and church community who are reading this, remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” May you find rest in Christ, joy once again in your spirits, and support from your CoLCA family. Please continue to let us know your needs, great or small, that we may come along side you to care for you.
School has been closed since September 7th and we are pleased to announce that we will be reopening on September 21st! God is good, and we thank Him for each one of our students, His precious lambs!
Thank you to all who have been praying and for the love and support that is shared with the Crown of Life family!
What a fun and out-of-this-world day it has been at Crown of Life! One week into the new school year and our teachers and elementary students had an extraordinary opportunity to learn about solar eclipses. Here in Fort Myers, Florida, we experienced a partial eclipse at around 75% while the path of the total solar eclipse stretched across the center of our nation.
We watched live coverage of the event as it passed over the Midwest and listened to scientists as they explained the movement of the moon orbiting the earth, as the earth orbits the sun.
Our normal August weather in SW Florida consists of afternoon thunderstorms, but God blessed us with a bright day with few clouds for us to experience this event. Our students were educated on the importance of not looking directly at the sun. Therefore, we made pinhole projectors with both sheets of paper and boxes, and kept our backs turned toward the sun, so that our eyes could watch the eclipse through the pinhole projectors. The students were excited to see the shadow of the moon move across the circle of light from the sun on their papers, creating a crescent of light. Our day stayed bright as the sun still shined upon us even in partial view.
History was made today, not just in the United State’s Total Solar Eclipse of 2017, but in the memories and lives of each of our students. Our students experienced this moment together, creating even stronger bonds of friendship. God’s glory of His creation was on display and it will be a fun day that we will always remember!
